Paul Hutchins’ Modern Day CSX      August 17, 2019

by Nicholas Kalis

Paul had a nice turnout of the Potomac Division to his layout located in Charles County Maryland. Interestingly, Paul’s home faces CSX tracks that serve a coal-fired electric generating plant. Unfortunately, no trains passed on the right-of-way during our visit. Paul’s layout is located in his detached garage behind his home. The greeter was Dale Latham.

Paul said that “the P & D Railroad stands for himself and his deceased friend Dave who always came over to help with any crisis; he will be sadly missed.” The P & D is a modern day railroad with rule areas such as industries, inter modal yard, trucking businesses, homes, and a main staging yard. The layout is 14' by 8' by 9' with the extension of the staging yard. The track is in a dog bone shape with two mainlines going east to west and west to east. The best way to explain the overall layout shape is that it is similar in shape to a staple."

The railroad is about 15 to 20 years old and is complete other than regular maintenance. Paul models current era CSX, Conrail, and Norfolk Southern in HO- Scale. His operating and control system Digitrax. This was the Potomac Divisions first visit to Paul's railroad.
