The Western
North Carolina Railroad (WNCRR), a 22' x 50' HO scale railroad set in
the early 1950s, features a 400' mainline, a 35' long yard, many
scratch built structures, big grades, hand laid track, two extensive
staging yards, a fully operational trolley system and bench work high
enough to allow stand-up maintenance, all housed in a historic board
and batten station, first occupied in 1859. The club, now in our 59th
year, has over 60 active members. Website: www.nvmr.org
The WNCRR did
exist, running west from Spencer, NC until being absorbed by the
Southern in the 1880s. In our minds, however, the WNCRR still exists as
an independent with modeled portions from Spencer to Ashville NC.
Extensive mountain scenery features thousands of hand made trees and
many detailed and scratch built structures, including the Salisbury, NC
station built by MMR Doug Kirkpatrick that won the 2003 MER convention
"Best in Show Award. The famous "loops" have a ruling grade that
approaches 3.5%. Two helixes (one with 7 levels) help move traffic up
and down the railroad. Check out the truly unique custom designed
switch motors, many built some 30 years ago, that move turnouts often
several feet away using metal clothes lines as push rods. NVMR was one
of the early DCC users. All visible track and turnouts are hand laid
for a very high level of reliability. The fully operational trolley
line fronts the layout. Come and visit and run a train up the hill.
