Dan Vandermause's
B&O West End Subdivision
October 21, 2007
Dan
Vandermause's S-scale layout was the first S-scale layout that
this author has visited and I must say that I was quite impressed with
the workability and realism that this scale provides.
Approximately 11'x45'
the layout itself is based on the B+O in the mid 1960's with first
generation diesels and many coal hoppers and utilizes an oval track
plan where the operators are inside the oval. The central area is more
than ample to handle numerous visitors and operators and I enjoyed the
perspective of watching the trains as they moved from one scene to
another.
One end of
the layout has finished scenery. The track is complete with I believe
only a staging area to be finished up. The track and roadbed is
extremely realistic looking. Structure construction is progressing with
many mockups being used to develop the right look.
Dan
explained to me his ideas on the final operations aspect of the layout
utilizing the loop aspect along with point to point and the staging.
His operations ideas intrigued me and I can only hope that we are
invited back to revisit this layout.
